The Phoenician: A Multifaceted Desert Oasis. If you have never stayed at the Five Diamond Award winning Phoenician Resort; you owe it to yourself to experience this level of service and pampering at least once. Everything about the Phoenician is incredible. From its’ stunning backdrop of Camelback Mountain to the wool carpeting in the guest rooms, every detail of this resort has been well planned and executed. This is a large resort with 654 guest rooms, 27 holes of golf, 9 swimming pools, 11 restaurants and lounges, and an incredible tennis center. But most of all this is a hotel whose staff is great. All of the gleaming marble and lush landscaping in the world mean nothing without warm and genuine service. Everyone from the concierge to the landscaping crew were wonderful. The Style of the resort is less southwestern than you might expect from its location. I for one have no problem with this. The common areas and rooms are warm, the furnishings sumptuous, and everything sparkles. All of these factors might lead you to believe that you should wear a coat and tie to breakfast. On the contrary, The Phoenician is very comfortable and never uptight in its luxury. This is the ideal Five Star resort for every one from a married couple to a family with kids. Whether it’s a romantic getaway or a family vacation, The Phoenician can and will provide a wonderful experience. When you arrive at the Phoenician, take the valet parking not the self park route, you are amazed at how the resort seems to nestle up to Camelback Mountain. The lush landscaping beckons you forward toward the grand entrance, and inside inlaid marble floors and a soothing fountain announce your arrival at a special resort. There are many choices in room style and size, however I would recommend the Casitas for summertime visits. The Casitas have larger patios which are shaded; and in 110 degree heat the shade is a luxury in itself. In season all of the rooms are wonderful, although some views are limited so do be specific about your view preferences when booking your stay. After you’ve settled in and are ready for some fun, your choices are myriad. If relaxing poolside is your idea of activity, The Phoenician has nine sparkling pools for you to sample. And if the Sun gets to hot there is plenty of shade and a cool drink is always available from the attentive pool staff. After you have worshipped the Sun, a trip to the Centre for Well-Being is a great way to be pampered. The Centre for Well-Being offers traditional spa services, Fitness Classes, Workout Areas, and in the Spirit of the area; a Meditation Atrium. You can relax in a comfortable chaise lounge while centering yourself through guided meditation sessions. If you are like me and have a hard time sitting still, don’t worry you will not get bored at The Phoenician. The Phoenician boasts 27 holes of championship golf. At 6,300 yards the layouts are not overly long, but are challenging and are in tremendous shape. The courses are managed by Troon Golf; so you can count on having the service oriented experience Troon is famous for. If you would rather hit a moving target then the Tennis Garden is for you. You have the choice of several surfaces, including a Wimbledon Championship Grass Court, and a single player practice court. I will admit to being a less than stellar tennis player, but this was one of the nicest tennis centers of any resort I have every visited. If you are traveling with children don’t fret, The Funicians Kids Club is great. They offer daily activities for children aged 5-12. A great way for them to make friends and for you to have a little me time. Unlike many resorts, which send you running into town for meals, The Phoenician has dining choices for every palate. From wonderfully romantic dinners to casual meals in your room the dining options are plentiful. Just a note: The Five Diamond Mary Elaine Restaurant has closed its doors. This would appear to be a sad blow to fine dining; however in the fall of 2008 it is being replaced by a multi-concept restaurant by renowned chef Jean- Georges Vongerichten. I can’t wait to try it. If all of these activities are not enough, simply consult the dynamite Concierge Staff to arrange visits to points of interest, shopping trips, or any thing you can think of. I have no doubt they can satisfy your requests. The Phoenician Resort is located at 6000 East Camelback Road, Scottsdale, Arizona 85251.
